History of the Floyd County Republican Party
The Floyd County Republican Party is rich in history. We have come from once being banned from the ballot to now garnering the majority of vote in almost every election.
In the general election of 2008, John McCain carried the county with 67.40% of the vote. Republican incumbent Public Service Commissioner Doug Everett led the Republican charge with 77.11% of the vote. Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne became the first elected Republican county-wide consitutional officer. Earlier in that year in the Presidential Preference Primary, 9,979 (or 56.43%) voters chose the Republican ballot whereas only 7,704 voters chose the Democratic ballot.
In 2006, Republican incumbent Governor Sonny Perdue won 63.16% of the vote over Democrat Mark Taylor. It was also in that year that Republican Katie Dempsey became the first Republican and female to represent the people of District 13 in the State House of Representatives.
In 2004, Republican incumbent President George W. Bush won 67.66% of the vote over Democrat John Kerry. It was also in that year that Republican Barry Loudermilk beat 30-year incumbent Democrat Buddy Childers with 61.50% of the vote to become the District 14 State Representative.
In 2002, Republican Sonny Perdue won 59.20% of the vote to beat Incumbent Democrat Roy Barnes in the race to be Georgia’s Governor. It was also in that year that Republican Preston Smith beat 12-year incumbent Democrat Richard Marable with 54.20% of the vote to become the District 52 State Senator.
Today, the Republican Party controls all of the Floyd County Board of Commissioners seats and four of the five Floyd County School Board seats.
